DISTRIBUTED FIBER OPTIC SENSING TECHNOLOGY
Brillouin optical time domain reflectometer (BOTDR) utilizes spontaneous Brillouin scattering. Spectral analysis of the back scattered light enable the system to measure the change in strain and/or temperature. Brillouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA) utilizes stimulated Brillouin scattering to measure strain and temperature. The sensitivity of BOTDA system is significantly better than BOTDR. The main difference of these two systems is that, in BOTDA system, two laser beams are injected into opposite ends of the fiber. A continuous wave beam is injected into one end of the fiber, while a pulse is injected into the other. In BOTDR, only a single laser beam is pulsed into one end of the fiber.
